Grateful Dead - Providence, RI - 1987-09-07

Grateful Dead - Providence, RI - 1987-09-07 Grateful Dead at the Civic Center in Providence, RI on September 7, 1987.

Opening night of Fall Tour! Hot damn! The weather was still more summer than fall as we packed into Rob's Volkswagen Rabbit for the short trip between New Haven and Providence. We got there early/mid afternoon and spent the day kicking around the capitol area and Shakedown Street.

The Dead were coming off a crazy summer - hit single, hit album, huge stadium tour with Dylan, MTV awareness(!), hell they were rock stars! While lots of 'heads remember that era as one when the scene started overflowing with troublemaking newbies two points cannot be denied: the influx started several years earlier when they started playing the summer stadium and shed circuit and the shows throughout '87 were by and large pretty hot. They did not always get as out there as they would again from like '89 - mid '91 - they were much more song-focused - but they were tight, featuring crystalline post-coma soloing from Jerry, a fair dose of Phil bombs, spirited Bobby action and of course the man who often held it together and pushed it further back then, Brent.

They also had a playfulness in the late '80s that went away as the '90s unfolded (save for a some hijinks spurred on by Hornsby during his post-Brent stint). At this show the fun manifested when Jerry ripped into "La Bamba" in the middle of "Good Lovin". You might remember the movie based on the Richie Valens life story - and the Los Lobos cover of "La Bamba" - were everywhere that summer.
