Bob Dylan - Bristol, CT - 1988-09-04

Bob Dylan at Lake Compounce Festival Park, Bristol, CT on September 4, 1988, with support act Timbuk 3.

Yeah, that's right, the "Future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" people opened for Dylan. All two of them and their drum machine...Timbuk 3 were made up of husband and wife Pat and Barbara McDonald. Hubby Pat played guitar and harmonica while Barbara alternated between bass and guitar. The third member of the group was a boombox which played drum loops. Pat would place the boombox on a stool on the stage and they would swap out cassettes depending on the song they wanted to play.

Which wasn't half as bad as standing in the pouring rain while Dylan played almost the entire set with his back to the audience...

This was show 51 of the Never-ending Tour, though I don't think that named started being used by the Dylan-ologists until the mid/late-90s - it is used to describe the period beginning in 87/88 continuing through today (almost 2000 shows later) where Bob has pretty much toured if not non-stop, with a regularity unlike anyone else of the 60s the time this tour was actually called the "Interstate 88 Tour".

I remember thinking that the show sucked but listening back to the recording it is certainly no worse than many late-80s Dylan sets and better then some others I remember...I think what had me so bent was that I went to a ton of shows that summer, was running out of loot, and had to choose between Dylan and Santana. I caught what I thought was a crappy Dylan show in the rain only to have the sun shine the day of the Santana concert...and almost 20 years later I still haven't seen Santana but never pass up a chance to see Bob! Maybe if Bob would let Clive Davis re-invent him I could write him off, too.

Dylan had a really small group during this era, only a 4-piece, with G.E. Smith, Kenny Aaronson and Christopher Parker backing him.
