Jorma Kaukonen Band - New Haven, CT - 1995-11-28

Jorma Kaukonen Band, Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, November 28, 1995

I love Jorma. He's one of those artists I try to see as often as possible in whatever configuration he tours, and there are plenty.

This was a particularly cool band, one he put together while Jack Cassidy was out with Paul Kantner and what Jorma called, "the Hovercraft". On this tour the Jorma Kaukonen Band was, in addition to Jorma, Michael Falzarano on guitar, Pete Sears on keys and Harvey Sorgen on drums.

This was not a particularly easy time in my life. It was a fun time, but lean. I owned a bookstore in New Haven and was really struggling to make ends meet. I lived with a buddy of mine and between the two of us we managed to scrape up enough money to go to this show and have like $20 to spend getting tanked up...But the problem was it was our last $20 and we had no groceries...so the choice was "Jorma and some cheap drinks" or "dinner". You know where this is going, don't you? We wound up having rice with parsely in it for dinner, laying down a nice base over which we could pour some alcohol. Which we did. Two guys could still get drunk for $20 in New Haven back then.

I've had many great meals since this night to make up for things, to the point that I probably weigh 40 pounds more than I did back then...and its been a long time since I had to worry about money, especially like back then. It has been a fun, long road since this night but when I listen to this recording I honestly have nothing but fond memories of that time - little to no responsibility, the sense that almost any mistake could be covered up or made up for...carefree, I guess...

Enough from me. Enjoy the tunes.
