McCoy Tyner - 4x4

This is a re-post of an earlier article...I confused this record, 4x4, with a different record, featuring most of the same people, called Four Times Four...

4x4 is an interesting record, one which features McCoy in, you guessed it, four different quartets. The core of each ensemble is McCoy with Al Foster on drums and Cecil McBee on bass. The soloists joining in to round out each quartet are trumpeter Freddie Hubbard John Abercrombie on electric mandolin, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and Arthur Blythe on alto sax.

The highlight of the record for me, posted below, is the blazing send-up with Abercrombie of McCoy's own composition, Forbidden Land, which initially appeared on Cosmos (featured as part of this project back in February).

Dig.
