I have been wanting to post about this record for a few weeks...I don't know how many year-end lists it made but it should have...
Melvin Gibbs has been a regular here in a roundabout way - usually for his contributions on other musicians' record. He's been featured here with Sonny Sharrock, Ronald Shannon Jackson, John Zorn and probably others I am not remembering...When you contribute to 200+ recordings it makes it hard for a cat to keep up...
Pretty much every word I have read about this record refers to its African-ness, and I suppose that is what I responded to most. My favorite tracks, "Canto por Odudua", "Mojuba" and "Macumba" are driving, rhythmic and downright funky...and don't ignore those guitar contributions from Pete Cosey (who played with electric Miles but also co-founded Earth Wind & Fire) and Blackbyrd McKnight (from Parliament-Funkadelic).
Take a trip through at least 40 years of African-inspired contemporary music without leaving your chair...
